Flooring Design for Zoning and WayfindingFrom a more functional perspective, flooring can help contribute to a building%u2019s accessibility and flexibility by helping occupants to navigate the space. Floor layout can help with wayfinding and identify different floors and define work and relaxation zones within a buildingCreating a Sense of PlaceThe final concept in the WELL Building Standard is Community which aims to support access to essential healthcare, workplace health promotion and accommodations for new parents as well as establishing an inclusive, integrated community through social equity, civic engagement and accessible design. Communities are characterized by groups of people with diverse characteristics who are linked by social ties, share common perspectives and engage in joint action and experiences in shared settings or locations. Within the workplace unique communities exist where people work, socialise, play and learn together. Once again, using the floor plane is a great way to promote a sense of community. Appropriate colours and designs can be drawn upon to reflect a whole range of the aspects covered in this concept, including references to geographic location, art, sport, architecture, history and culture. As well as the functional aspects of design, the aesthetics of a space have a profound effect on mental health and general well-being. The Mind concept within the WELL Building Standard recognises this and promotes mental health through policy, program and design strategies that seek to address the diverse factors that influence cognitive and emotional well-being. The selection of materials, including floorcoverings, can contribute to this section of the standard. The floor plane offers an ideal canvas to inject colour and pattern to create the appropriate mood for a particular team or activity.
